🌸  A GrandMother’s Story for Grandparent's Day!

Mother’s Day has always meant something a little deeper to me and has always carried a little bit more for me.

Because growing up, I didn’t just have my mom—
I was blessed with my Grandmom too.

My mother was strong, determined, and doing everything she could as a single mom to give me the life I deserved. She carried responsibilities that most people never see, balancing love and survival at the same time.

And then there was my grandmother—
the one I quietly came to think of as my second mom.

She didn’t replace my mother.
She stood beside her.

Where my mom worked hard to build our future, my grandmother filled our days with warmth, stability, and a kind of love that felt endless. Together, they created a foundation that held me up in ways I didn’t fully understand until I got older.

Looking back, I realize something special:

I didn’t grow up with less.
I grew up with more.

My grandmother had a way of making everything feel okay.

Her home was a safe place, a soft landing when life felt uncertain. There was always something comforting waiting—whether it was a warm meal, a familiar routine, or simply her presence.

She didn’t need grand gestures.

She showed her love in the everyday moments:

  • The way she checked on me
  • The way she made sure I was taken care of
  • The way she gave without ever expecting anything back

It was steady. It was quiet. It was everything.

Being raised by a single mom meant life could feel overwhelming at times—but I never felt alone.

Because my grandmother was always there.

She filled in the gaps before I even knew they existed.
She gave me extra hugs, extra care, extra reassurance.

She was, in every sense of the word,
twice the mom.

When she passed away in November of 2003, I didn’t just lose my grandmother.

I lost a piece of the love that helped raise me.

There’s a certain kind of grief that comes when you lose someone who was part of your everyday life—someone who helped shape who you are. It doesn’t go away. It just changes form.

But so does love.

Because even now, years later, I still feel her with me.

In the lessons she taught me without saying a word.
In the way I care for others.
In the quiet strength I carry inside me.

Her love didn’t end—it became a part of me.

Grandparent’s Day can be bittersweet when your Grandmom is no longer here. But I’ve come to see it as something more than loss.

It’s a reminder.

A reminder that I was loved deeply—by not one, but two incredible women.

One who gave me life.
And one who helped nurture it every single day.

So this Grandparent'’s Day, I honor her.

My grandmother, for being my second mom—
for loving me in a way that made life feel whole.

If love could be measured, mine was doubled.

I was raised with twice the care,
twice the guidance,
and twice the love.

And that is something I will carry with me forever.

To the world, she was my grandmother.
But to me, she was something more—she was my second mom.

Growing up in a single-parent home wasn’t always easy. My mom carried so much on her shoulders, doing everything she could to give me a good life. And standing right beside her—steady, loving, and unwavering—was my grandmother.

She filled in the spaces where life felt heavy.
She made sure I never felt like I was missing anything.

I remember her home as a place of warmth. It wasn’t just the temperature—it was the feeling. The kind of comfort that wrapped around you the moment you walked through the door. There was always something cooking, always a chair waiting, always love ready to be given without asking.

She had a way of making ordinary days feel special.

Whether it was sitting together talking about nothing and everything, laughing over little things, or just being in her presence, those moments became the memories I hold closest today.

She didn’t just take care of me—she showed up for me.

She was there when I needed comfort.
She was there when I needed guidance.
She was there when I just needed someone to sit beside me and remind me that I was loved.

When she passed away in 2003, something in my world shifted.

There’s a kind of loss that words can’t fully explain—the kind where you don’t just miss a person, you miss the way they made life feel. That’s what I lost when I lost her.

But even in that loss, something beautiful remained.

Because the truth is—she never really left me.

She lives in the way I remember her laughter.
In the lessons she taught without even realizing it.
In the love she poured into me that I now carry forward.

Sometimes, I catch myself doing something she used to do, or saying something she would say—and in those moments, it feels like she’s still right here.

Grandparent's day can be bittersweet when someone you love is no longer here. But I’ve learned that it can also be a day of gratitude.

A day to remember.
A day to honor.
A day to say thank you—even if it’s whispered into the quiet.

So today, I celebrate two mothers.

My mom, who gave me life and strength.
And my grandmother, who helped shape my heart.

If you still have your mother or grandmother, hold them close. Listen to their stories. Sit a little longer. Say the things that matter.

And if, like me, your second mom is watching over you—know that the love she gave you didn’t end. It became part of who you are.

This Mother’s Day, I don’t just remember my grandmother…

I carry her with me.
