What to Pack for Mom, Baby, for normal & a C-Section Recovery
Preparing for your little one's arrival? Here's what you really need—and what you can leave at home!
Congratulations, Mama! 💕
Your baby's arrival is getting closer, and you're probably wondering, "What in the world should I pack in my hospital bag?"
If you're a first-time mom, especially one preparing for a C-section, packing can feel overwhelming. Between the adorable baby outfits, postpartum essentials, and everything you see recommended online, it's easy to overpack!
But don't worry! We've put together 10 helpful tips to make packing easier, more organized, and a lot less stressful.
💗 10 Hospital Bag Packing Tips for First-Time Moms 👩🍼
1. Pack Your Hospital Bag Early!
Aim to have your hospital bag ready around 36 to 40 weeks weeks of pregnancy, or earlier if your doctor recommends it.
Babies don't always arrive on schedule!
Keep your bag somewhere easy to grab, and make sure your support person knows where it is.
2. Choose Comfortable Clothes for C-Section Recovery
After a C-section, your abdomen will be tender, and you'll want clothing that doesn't rub against your incision.
Pack:
- 2–3 loose-fitting nightgowns or nursing-friendly pajamas
- 1–2 comfortable nursing or supportive bras
- 3–4 pairs of high-waisted, soft underwear
- A lightweight robe
- Non-slip slippers
- A loose-fitting going-home outfit
Mom Tip: High-waisted underwear and loose dresses can be more comfortable than leggings or pants that press against your incision.
3. Don't Forget Your Personal Toiletries!
Hospitals provide some basic supplies, but having your favorite products can make you feel more comfortable.
Bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hairbrush, hair ties, lip balm, facial wipes, and travel-size shampoo and conditioner.
Extra Tip: Hospitals can be dry, so lip balm and moisturizer are especially helpful!
4. Pack a Few C-Section Recovery Essentials
C-section recovery can involve a hospital stay of approximately 2–4 days, depending on your recovery and hospital procedures.
Consider packing:
- A small pillow to hold against your abdomen when coughing or during the ride home
- High-waisted postpartum underwear
- Comfortable slip-on shoes
- A long phone charger
- A refillable water bottle
Ask your hospital what postpartum supplies they provide. Many supply maternity pads, disposable underwear, and other recovery essentials.
5. Bring Important Documents
Keep these in a small folder or easy-to-reach pocket:
- Photo identification
- Health insurance card
- Hospital registration information
- Birth preferences, if you have them
- A list of medications and allergies
- Important phone numbers
You don't want to be searching through your suitcase when it's time to check in!
6. How Many Baby Outfits Do You Actually Need? 👶
Here's the big question!
For a typical 2–4-day Normal or C-section hospital stay, packing 3–5 baby outfits is usually plenty.
Most hospitals provide basic baby clothing or blankets during the stay, so your little one may not need a different outfit every day.
A practical packing list:
- 2–3 newborn sleepers or zip-up outfits
- 1–2 outfits in size 0–3 months, just in case
- 1 special going-home outfit (which can be one of the outfits above)
- 2 pairs of socks, if outfits don't cover baby's feet
- 1–2 soft hats, if needed for going home
- 2 burp cloths
Mom Tip: Choose soft, easy-to-open sleepers with zippers. They're much easier for diaper changes than complicated outfits with lots of buttons!
And remember, newborn sizes don't fit every baby. Having one or two slightly larger outfits is a smart idea.
7. Don't Overpack Diapers and Wipes!
Many hospitals provide newborn diapers and wipes during your stay.
Check with your hospital before packing an entire diaper bag.
If supplies are provided, you may only need a small backup pack.
8. Don't Forget Feeding Essentials
Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, formula-feeding, or combining methods, preparation helps!
Consider bringing:
- Nursing bras
- Breast pads
- Nipple cream, if breastfeeding
- Your preferred feeding supplies, if recommended by the hospital
- A breastfeeding pillow, if you'd like one
Hospitals generally have feeding support and supplies, but policies vary. Ask whether you need to bring formula or bottles.
9. Pack a Small Bag for Your Support Person
Dad, Grandma, or another support person may be staying overnight too!
Their bag should include comfortable clothes, toiletries, medications, snacks, a phone charger, and a light blanket or sweatshirt.
Having a prepared support person makes those first days a little easier.
10. Save Room in Your Bag for the Trip Home!
You'll probably leave the hospital with more than you brought!
Between paperwork, baby keepsakes, and any supplies the hospital allows you to take home, extra space comes in handy.
Important: Make sure your baby's rear-facing car seat is properly installed before delivery day. Avoid bulky clothing or thick blankets underneath the car seat harness.
